What type of website do I need?

Take a minute and ask yourself, "does my website meet my business objectives?". If it doesn't it may be time to either 'rebuild or revamp'. There are a number of types of websites to consider across a range of budgets;

A static brochure style website - This is the very basic type of website with little or no browser interaction. It may have a basic conversion form, ie. 'contact us' or email collection. All updates, amends and maintenance have to be done by a developer. This type of website can be developed for a low budget but there would be on-going costs. Examples: Twodeck, Palm Cove and Mania Group.

A CMS (content management system) - This is similar to the above but it is flexible, scaleable and can be edited by anyone with basic word processing skills, normally through a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) interface. You would not need a developer to update your site or add content, all maintenance would be completed automatically. A CMS is like buying a car, you would get the model that suits both your objectives and your budget. The majority of eCommerce sites would be built in a CMS so you could add and amend products as required. CMS examples: Cabana Bar (http://www.cabanabar.com.au/), DGI Global and Modern House. eCommerce examples: Australian Welding Supplies, Spartan Picture Ball and promotional sites such as 'Moovies'.

Then there are the bespoke websites that are built to you exact requirements. These are usually flash, HTML, HTML5, Javascript or a mix. But before you go off and spend lots of money on a flash site remember that it was created for PC's and use with your mouse. As we are moving across to tablets, smart phones and touch screens flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content (flash is expensive to both build and maintain!). Examples: OO Movie ClubSpartan Picture Ball and promotional sites such as 'Moovies'.

Whilst you are thinking about the style of website you require also think about your target market. What device would they be commonly using to view your site? Your site needs to be both viewable and functional across all devices. Then of course, once you have decided what style of website you require there is the online marketing which can include: SEO, SEM, social media, banners and email communications.
